Airtran Airways proudly showcases their company's mission statement on their website at airtran.com -- Airtran is made up of "Innovative people dedicated to delivering the best flying experience to smart travelers. Every day." An interesting comment from an interesting airline.
The company was once known as Valujet. However, on September 24, 1997, AirTran/ValuJet CEO D. Joseph Corr announced at Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, "I'm pleased to announce that we are permanently retiring the name ValuJet and henceforth we will be known as AirTran Airlines."
Today, AirTran Airways is one of America’s largest low-fare airlines. It employs 6,000 friendly, professional crew Members and currently operates over 500 flights a day to more than 40 destinations. The airline’s hub is at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Airtran has the youngest airline fleet, by craft age, and operates a fleet entirely made up of Boeing aircraft.
Airtran currently flies from Atlanta, with service to: Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Mobile, Chicago (Midway) Flint Michigan, Akron, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington (Dulles), Raleigh Durham, Savannah, Jacksonville, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and Tampa. There are also Chicago(Midway)-Washington(Dulles) flights, and Boston-Washington (Dulles) flights. And the airline started operating a flight from New York (LGA) to Atlanta as well.
Airtran has done some fairly savvy marketing in the last few years. The airline started an outreach to students and gen x-ers with their X fares program. This system offered $25 walk up fares for those with the time to try this type of strategy. In the next few months Airtran has pledged to offer XM radio in all of their planes to cater to the business traveler.
The website looks too much like the AmericaWest site for the Travelsites team to truly recommend it, but low fares are to be had, so give it a try to see if one of the Airtran flights will fit your lifestyle.
