Site Report: Amtrak

You may wonder if people still travel by train. Although trains are our oldest form of transcontinental travel -- the Golden Spike was driven in 1869 after all, it's not something that most of us think about. The Travelsites Editors have all commuted from time to time via rail, but only one of us has ever taken a train trip. Our little survey of the willing doesn't mean that train travel is on the decline. It's not. In fact, due to the efforts on the website at amtrak.com and some good old fashioned marketing, traveling by train is on the rise.

And the folks that designed their website should be commended for their efforts. The team must have really understood that they were trying to win customers away from the air ticket sites, and so they crafted an experience that really mimics the airlines. For instance, you can login on the front page or get right to the booking path. And did you know that Amtrak offers frequent flier (trainer) miles? If you enroll in Amtrak points, can earn travel and earn Amtrak points towards a variety of rewards, like free Amtrak travel, hotel and rental car rewards, airline miles and more.

Is the site easy to use? Using Amtrak.com's Farefinder is pretty easy. If you've used a site like Orbitz or Travelocity, we think that you'll be able to get around pretty easily. The engine takes common airline city names -- BOS instead of Boston -- and is smart enough to show you your itinerary like airline sites, as most of the long distance trips you might take require a stop-over (or 2).

One of the most common questions people still have is -- does Amtrak service my area so I can take a train rather than a plane? Here's a quick guide to Amtrak's schedule. Since the service is point to point, notice the names of the trains -- it's taken from the areas where they run.
