Site Report:
When you think about first class service, British Airways is a name that immediately comes to mind. One of only two airlines to fly the famous Concorde supersonic jet, BA is the consumer's first choice for flights to London and the United Kingdom.
In fact, British Airways is the world's second largest international airline, carrying more than 27 million passengers from one country to another.
British Air operates out of two main airports, Heathrow (the world’s biggest international airport) and Gatwick.
British Airways is one of the oldest operating airlines in the world. It literally traces its origins back to the birth of civil aviation, all the way back to the days after World War I.
It wasn't always named BA, however. It was known as Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited (AT&T) when it launched the world's first daily international scheduled air service between London and Paris in 1919.
By 1924, Britain had four airlines, but all were fairly small. They were Instone, Handley Page, Daimler Airways (a successor to AT&T), and British Air Marine Navigation Company Limited. These airline merged to become Imperial Airways. In reaction, small carriers around the UK banded together to form the original privately-owned British Airways Limited. In 1939, Imperial and British Air merged together.
In 1979, the company went public on the London Exchange.
British Airways was one of the first airlines to really embrace the web... in fact, here's what the travelsites team wrote when we first visited their Agency.com designed website in 1997.
"One look at the BA web site and you can tell that they know how to take full advantage of the internet. This site is huge. It's useful and interactive, and there are tailor-made versions for twelve (count'em--12!) different coutries.
This website will save you lots of time. You can book your travel online, or just check fares and availability. If you need to pick a friend up from the airport, you can quickly check to see if the flight's been delayed at the BA website.
Looking for a vacation? You can book those online at the British Airways web site, too. You will find also extensive destination information on 15 different British Airways cities.
If you are a business traveler, you might be interested to know that British Airways offers cellular phone rentals when you travel to the U.K., so you can stay in touch wherever you go. As with everything else, you can make the arrangements online.
In addition, they have a very useful "Travel Q&A" section as well as general information about the new British Airways.
If you are a beginning web user, the hugeness of this website might be a little overwhelming at first. Don't let that scare you away! You can use the site index (an alphabetical listing of hypertexted names of topics in the website) as well as a guide to teach you how to take advantage of this great web site.
The British Airways website is setting a standard for all others to come.
TravelSites.com gives two thumbs up to this one!"
And we still do today!
