Site Report:
In July 2004, Continental celebrated its 70th anniversary. If you're counting, that means they're 65 years older than little old Jet Blue!

The airline traces its lineage to Varney Speed Lines, which began flying from El Paso to Pueblo, Co. way back in July 1934. In 1937, Varney Speed Lines changed its name to Continental Airlines. The Travelsites team thinks it's interesting to note that in 1987 Peoples Express was purchased by Continental. This merger put an end to an interesting brand story in the airline game, as well as one of the better fare wars in consumer history. It also provided Continental trans-continental routes within the United States and some trans-Atlantic routes to Europe.

Today, Continental Airlines is the world's sixth largest airline if you measure this by the amount of customers that are carried by the airline in the last calendar year. They're a major carrier - with over 55 million passengers flown in 2004 and a global flight schedule.

Continental Airlines currently offers approximately 2,500 departures daily to 136 domestic and 92 international destinations. As a major carrier, they operate with the hub and spoke model, where they have several cities that they fly into and out of, kind of emanating like spokes on a wheel. Continental's hub cities are Newark, Houston, Cleveland and they have an international hub in Guam.

Continental is especially good at serving international cities. They have more international routes than any other U.S. carrier, including extensive service throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Busiest Continental Airlines Routes

Houston-NYC 20 flights per day
Houston-Dallas 19 flights per day
Newark Liberty-Washington, D.C. 18 flights per day
Newark Liberty-Boston 12 flights per day
Houston-New Orleans 12 flights per day
Newark Liberty-Chicago 12 flights per day
Houston-Austin 11 flights per day
Houston-San Antonio 11 flights per day
Houston-Los Angeles 10 flights per day
Houston-Chicago 10 flights per day

And continental.com is no slouch either. Nearly 25 percent of Continental's customers are now going to continental.com to check in and print their boarding pass up to 24 hours in advance of their flight at continental.com. We're not surprised the site is attracting good volume -- It's a pretty clean site with good branding. The booking engine for air works well and really smacks of an earlier tech deal with the folks at Expedia. continental is one of the only major supplier sites that has a relationship with Travelweb.com for hotels, so users of their hotel booking engine have access to some proprietary hotel inventory.
