Site Report:
Song Airlines is an example of how the bigger carriers have learned from their smaller, more agile competitors.

Southwest launched in the seventies, but never really threatened Delta Airlines. However, Jetblue and Airtran grew into major threats to Delta and to their credit, they've summoned a response. Song Airlines is the airline that grew out of the competitive threats to Delta.

Song Airlines terms their type of service "low-fare, but high-style". It may have lower fares, but it's also a high growth part of Delta's future. According to Jerry Grinstein, Delta's chief executive officer, "In less than two years of operation, Song has proven to be a hit with passengers, a highly-efficient competitor, and a successful test bed for new and innovative ideas. Song is playing an important role in Delta's transformation."

Song Airlines has the operating structure (and hopefully someday the margins) like that of the other low cost carriers. They've built a wide array of on-board amenities that they use to distinguish the Song Airlines brand from other low-cost carriers. They've got designer flight attendant uniforms from Kate Spade. Song operates a fleet 36 Boeing 757s, with 199 all-leather, all-coach seats. Like JetBlue, Song has personal seatback video monitors that provide 24 channels of live, satellite television. In addition, they have 24 channels of audio programming and digitally-streamed MP3 programming. For just $5 you can order one of 10 movies that they've got on-demand. You can also play any of 10 video games. The Travelsites Editors love Song's interactive trivia game that allows passengers to compete against one another. Our top score is around 13,000.

Song also offers a comprehensive onboard menu, featuring healthful, organic selections, as well as a few indulgences, including its signature cocktails. The fun and socially conscious nature of the airline is only display at all times -- this year Song served a pink martini in order to raise money for breast cancer.

Song also introduced an In-Flight Fitness program. Designed by David Barton, the innovative 15 minute program is exclusively offered to Song Airlines customers.

Since its launch in April 2003, Song has grown to serve 13 cities with more than 140 non-stop flights between primarily the Northeast and Florida leisure destinations including West Palm Beach, Fort Myers, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando -- as well as Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Juan and Nassau, Bahamas. Although Song is a separate brand, all Song flights are operated by Delta Air Lines. Song tickets can be purchased by visiting www.flysong.com or calling 800-FLY-SONG (800-359-7664).
